User agent change

Postby the V » 07 Jul 2008 19:48

Hi Miha,
I'm having a problem with some sites not working (html truncated, blank page displayed) so I decided to take a look at the User Agent string.

By the was, let's make clear that this is NOT the culprit, instead it's probably due to bad server programming.

Anyway,
in Internet Explorer 6 (I usually use Maxthon or Opera instead, which are unaffected by the following behaviour) I discovered a longer than usual and messed up user agent string containing, almost like an advertising, the keyword "http://bsalsa.com"

I Googled for it and found this very short, interesting topic:
http://www.bsalsa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=686

Then I searched my C: drive for files containing the keyword "embeddedwb", finding that the only ones are the si.Mail executable itself and some default.mo localizations in the application folder.

As explained in the link above, I cleaned the User Agent string deleting the 2 extra keys; then while launching si.Mail they are instantly recreated, exactly:

Code: Select all

User-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; http://bsalsa.com)

Code: Select all

User-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; http://bsalsa.com) (EmbeddedWB 14,52 from: http://www.bsalsa.com/)

which result in giving to a server the following user agent string for my PC:

Code: Select all

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; User-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; http://bsalsa.com) ; User-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; http://bsalsa.com) (EmbeddedWB 14,52 from: http://www.bsalsa.com/); .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)

When si.Mail is quitted, only the second extra row is deleted, with the first - and shortest - one remaining.

I honestly don't think it's a real problem while surfing, however I believe it's not fair for a sub-component to change a setting of the machine, which by the way is not necessary for its proper functioning and looks more like a mere advertising.

At the bottom of the discussion previously linked, they suggest a simple work-aorund for this.
Do you think it can be "patched" into si.Mail?

Hi the V,

I've disabled this but unfortunatelly it will take a while to release next development build I really hope that you can manage it for a few more days.

Regards,
Miha

Definitely yes :D, thanks

From a couple of clues here and there the next build seems quite promising!
